Minimalism in interior design explained

minimalist interior design style

Homes by such iconic local architects as Wallace Neff and George Washington Smith. Minimalist is all about neatness, purity, and neutral colors, which is the perfect context for highlighting the slightest bit of disorder. Accordingly, you need to regularly declutter and make a place for everything. "In all spaces—and especially minimalist spaces—light is everything," Smith says. "Let the light shine in! From natural light to ambient softer light, you can create various moods with your lighting plan."

Play Up Your Coffee Table

"This can help create balance in the space and avoid things suddenly feeling cramped over time," Smith says. "Plants are an easy way to accessorize a room without adding more décor or furniture that could take away from the minimalist impact," Galloway notes. Minimalist homes certainly aren't packed with furniture, and pieces that do make the cut will therefore need to be ultra-utilitarian. She has written for MyDomaine since 2020 and contributes home, lifestyle, and wellness content for a number of other publications, including Apartment Therapy and Architectural Digest.

How to Decorate for Winter: 5 Tips to Transform Your Home into a Winter Wonderland

How to integrate minimalist design into your home without compromising on essentials. The journey of the minimalist home design was conceptualized based on the Zen philosophy that governs many oriental countries. In places like Japan, Korea, and other such regions, the available square footage to build a home is quite limited. Living a minimalist lifestyle can be beneficial for your mental health, your wallet, and the environment.

Layer Textures

More to the point, we are talking about introducing greenery in your living space. Culturally speaking, the introduction of greenery adds a sense of life in your home along with the connotations of good luck and good vibes. Zen is about decluttering your life to find peace within yourself, and today we will learn how to incorporate that into our fast-paced lifestyle. With over 11 years of experience in interior design and kitchen design, Ekta has worked on a wide range of projects from residential to commercial. She is currently leading the design team at Infinite Ideas Interiors, India.

Utilize Recess Lighting

Additionally, you need multi-functional furniture with clean lines, i.e., the pieces should support different purposes in order to save space. Circling back to the ideal color palette, you can use white walls for the most minimalist look. You can get creative with your color scheme as long as you keep it to monochromes of green, brown, beige, and white shades for the most part.

“You think of the Rococo period and Gaudí and all of these over the top design elements, ornamentation, and beautiful artisanship,” she explains. When looking at minimalism from this angle, it’s easy to understand that minimalist design doesn’t have any one specific beginning. “It didn’t start, but it got defined as a style right between the ’60s and ’70s,” Clarke says. The minimalist furniture design, lighting, and open spaces offer very little to the overall aesthetic value. The greenery provides some but you need the extra spice to liven up your home.

The clean lines of this living room designed by Robson Rak make you feel relaxed just looking at it. Even the detail and symmetry of the vertical window pane tracing down to the cushions of the sofa is soothing. Green nesting tables bring in some contrast with their rounded shape and varying heights, and white painted shiplap walls make the space feel more livable and approachable. Mackenzie & Co. added a textured rug, striped throw pillows, and low wooden tables to give this minimalist living room a casual and lived-in feel. It's a coastal concept that doesn't need a ton of accessories to prove the aesthetic is at work. "When selecting your furnishings, we prefer a crisp white or cream sofa that provides a neutral base and allows you to accent with color and pattern," designer Angela Hamwey says.

This approach not only saves you money in the long run but also ensures that you’re investing in pieces that are both functional and beautiful. Minimalist design emphasizes the use of natural materials and textures. The design style emphasizes the use of wood, stone, and other natural materials. If black-and-white is too stark for your taste, mix in one additional color in varying intensities. Here, blue repeats on large-scale abstract artwork, pillows, books, and blankets to energize a monochromatic color scheme. You could break the monotony of neutral colors by adding accents of pastel monochromes or full-hue primary colors; a cushion here or a vase there.

By investing in a few high-quality pieces, you can achieve a super luxurious look without spending extravagantly. Furthermore, adding plants, shrubs, succulents, and other indoor elements also contribute to the natural colors in your living room design aesthetic. If you incorporate flowering plants, they add a splash of bright colors as well.

Minimalist design shares DNA with Modern Architecture, Bauhaus Architecture, Brutalist Architecture, and mid-century modern design. In this case, the use of concrete in the interior — both at the sunken ground floor level and in the form of an in-situ stair — refers to the industrial history of the site. Concrete has a naturally weighty appearance; its use for the stairs enriches the idea of “sinking” into the ground floor from either side. Surrounding a large historic courtyard, this house’s large square windows create a lively dialogue between interior and exterior.

When designing your minimalist home, consider the principles of feng shui, such as the placement of furniture and the use of natural light. Use colors and textures that promote relaxation and tranquility, such as soft blues and greens, and natural materials like wood and stone. Keep the home office clutter-free by investing in storage solutions like a minimalist bookshelf or a filing cabinet with clean lines. Use decorative items sparingly and choose ones that have a purpose, like a desk lamp or a piece of art that complements the space. Each piece should serve a purpose, and unnecessary embellishments should be avoided. Look for furniture with clean lines and geometric shapes, such as a sleek sofa or a minimalist coffee table.

And along with well-crafted cabinetry, smart storage solutions are vital to keep surfaces organized and clutter-free. Minimalist interior design is a style known and appreciated for the simplicity and elegance it brings to a space. It is loaded with clean, clutter-free aesthetics, subtle colour palettes, and the use of natural textures. If you’re curious about the do’s and don’ts of minimalist interior design and want to learn how to make the most of it, you’ve come to the right place. The idea of uncluttered and clean space is truly a driver behind the minimalist movement, and the desire to seek and adapt its principal ideas in interior design.

Consider investing in multi-functional furniture pieces, such as a storage ottoman or a bed with built-in storage compartments. You can also use decorative baskets or boxes to store items that you don’t use on a daily basis. Scandinavian designers were inspired by the harsh climate and natural landscapes of the region, which influenced their use of natural materials like wood and stone. The Barcelona Chair, which he designed in 1929, is still a popular piece of furniture in minimalist homes today. When selecting furniture, look for pieces that are well-made and durable.

The firm’s portfolio is not defined by typologies, scale, or geography, but rather they are driven by a desire to explore the design potential of a given project. Their clients include large institutions, commercial businesses, consortia, and private individuals, and the diversity of their collaborators continues to grow. The master bedroom suite includes a sitting area and a large master bath. Jackson designed the platform bed and upholstered it with leather and waxed linen and placed a pop-up television at the end. Halila stone forms the bathroom’s interior walls, flooring, and sunken tub. Upholstered chairs and a round tulip table beautifully juxtapose an angular banquette.

Though still a conceptual project, Penda’s Hong Kong Art Storage is a unique and simple space whose interest lies in its flexibility and use of interesting materials. At its heart is a suitcase-like copper art storage box whose red tone is activated by the surrounding natural light, and warms the untouched rough concrete surroundings. This house’s interiors feature subdued planar surfaces made from stone and concrete that complement the beauty of the surrounding landscape and nearby lake.

Minimalist design can be used in any room in the house, from a simply accessorized powder room to a luxurious but low-key master bedroom. Hallmarks of minimalist decor include plenty of natural light, coordinating (not contrasting) palettes, interesting textures, and open spaces. Minimalist interior design is popular amongst those who crave simplicity in a complicated world. An uncluttered minimalist interior is easier to clean and maintain and appeals to people who want to reduce consumption in the context of the climate emergency. Minimalist interiors with an emphasis on clean lines, natural light, and neutral palettes have a calming feel that many people find appealing. Tulley also mentions the firsthand benefits she has seen from employing a minimalist design aesthetic in her projects.

At Wilmington University, students can learn about video game design in a hands-on environment with the school’s Bachelor of Science in Game Design and Development program. The dark, elegant lobby exudes sophistication, with marble floors and rows of black walnut pillars and arches that reach up to the mezzanine level. Traditional brass and glass chandeliers hang over velour sofas. Perhaps the thing the Read House is most known for is the haunting of room 311.

With the influx of passengers and goods moving through, the city needed a hotel. Abundant natural light, Jazz-age furnishings and a queen-size bed make for a sublime escape. Bridgeman’s Chop House is the hotel’s premier on-site restaurant. The sophisticated setting – think dark wood walls, elegant white tablecloths, and waitstaff in dapper uniforms – sets the tone for a “treat yourself” style meal. Although the convenient downtown location of the Read House will make you want to get out and explore, there are dining options inside the hotel, too. The elegant lobby sets the tone for your Read House experience. Marble floors, the hotel’s original crystal chandeliers, and plush 1920s-style furniture make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The uniforms of the hotel personnel stay true to the period.

Silver sconces, elaborately prepared meals in the famous Porterhouse restaurant. Enjoy our indoor pool & fitness center, with state-of-the-art fitness equipment. Our pool area also features a lush lounge area perfect for a bit of leisure. During the Read House’s most recent renovation, the room was restored to its original 1920s state. This is the only door in the hotel that opens with a physical key. My door had a privacy feature where I could flip a switch and let housekeeping know not to knock versus having to manually put out a do not disturb sign.

Over time, the Read House Hotel became synonymous with opulence and luxury. Unfortunately, the inn caught fire and was razed to the ground in 1867. And so it was time for the property to be passed into new hands... Financial prosperity did not come to the hotel’s new owners, and, in fact, during the Civil War itself, the property was converted into a makeshift hospital for Union forces in 1863. Chattanooga’s Crutchfield family saw opportunity for financial success and grabbed it by the horns.

We dined at Bridgemans and it was superb and convenient. And lastly we required assistance to and from our room because we were traveling with my elderly mother. The valet staff were so helpful and quick to help with luggage and retrieve the car. We will stay here again and recommend to friends and family.

Guest rooms also include blackout blinds so that you can relax and enjoy your stay no matter the time of day. This hotel is a non-smoking property that offers an outdoor sun deck and full-service Starbucks on site. The Read House is in downtown Chattanooga, about a six-minute drive or 15-minute walk (north) of the Tennessee Aquarium and other attractions along the city’s bustling riverfront. The city’s free electric shuttle bus stops in front of the hotel, and it makes other stops throughout downtown in a 15-minute loop. A 24-hour diner is across the street from the hotel, and several other restaurants are within walking distance.

Fabulous hotel, clean extremely comfortable beds, hotel staff a pleasure to deal with. Everything was delightful and decorated for Christmas. Location was convenient to the electric buses which were a bonus.

Guests are required to show a photo ID and credit card upon check-in. Please note that all Special Requests are subject to availability and additional charges may apply. Guests are required to show a photo identification and credit card upon check-in. We upgraded to a more spacious room with a walk in shower. Restaurant was good but the air con kept the area too cold, had to get a sweater.

There is also a Bar & Billiards room and an on site restaurant known as the Bridgeman’s Chophouse. Guests can enjoy in-room dining with room service and there are concierge services available to handle all guest needs. In 1867, the Crutchfield House found itself at the confluence of a more primal conflict—between the destructive forces of nature. 1867 marked the largest flood in Chattanooga’s history, with the deluge filling the hotel’s grant lobby with five feet of water. Small boats ferried people to check in at the front desk.

The Read House from $97 Chattanooga Hotel Deals & Reviews

There is also a formal ballroom, making this a great downtown destination for a Chattanooga wedding or other special occasions. The hotel can provide planning assistance for events, including catering menus, A/V services, and more. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), this property is taking steps to protect the safety of guests and staff. Certain services and amenities may be reduced or unavailable as a result. The hotel is gorgeous and we loved both the facilities and the location downtown. A draw when booking is the indoor heated pool advertised, however, it’s not very warm and much in need of a renovation.

The Read House Offers the Following Room Amenities:

In January 21, 1861, at the eve of the Civil War, Jefferson Davis stopped at the hotel on his way home to Mississippi after resigning from the United States Senate. The merging of the Western and Atlantic Rail Roads in the mid-1800s made Chattanooga much more accessible. Goods could be transported East to West, through Appalachia.

Who had heard of The Read House knew of the legendary Peter “Rabbit” Bridgeman. He served and charmed hotel and dining guests for 47 years. There’s an electric shuttle that stops right across the street from the hotel (go out the side entrance where the restaurants are), and you’ll see the shuttle stop. The shuttles are clean and convenient if you’re flexible on time, but overall, I found the wait time longer than what was posted. If you’re not in a hurry, a free ride is a free ride.

Guest Rooms

Individuals who book their own reservation may cancel at no charge 48 hours prior to the day of arrival. Please note that a fee of the first-night room rate will be charged with less than 48 hours notice. The Silver Ballroom has been the site of hundreds of weddings, dances and special occasions, while the Green Room is famous for its frog legs, peppermint ice cream and special dinners. The pool and gym are in the Manor (newer) section of the hotel.

I thought the Read House was very conveniently located, and it was near everything I wanted to do while I was in town. There’s no free parking in downtown Chattanooga during the day (some of the lots and street meters don’t charge to park after six p.m.), but I was able to find plenty of paid parking when I needed it. I divided my three-and-a-half days in Chattanooga with downtown activities and more active pursuits around the Lookout Mountain area, which is about six miles from downtown Chattanooga. I loved being able to walk or take the free shuttle around downtown Chattanooga. The city is easy to navigate on foot, and if you’re up for walking a mile or so, you can get to a lot of cool places in the city. Jefferson Davis stayed at the Crutchfield House on January 21, 1861, while traveling home to Mississippi after resigning from the United States Senate.

Our Rich History

This full-service historic property hosts numerous corporate functions and social events in its 13,500 square feet of meeting space. The spectacular Silver Ballroom showcases 25-foot ceilings, silver-leaf moldings, and original 1926 sterling silver and Waterford crystal chandeliers. Corporate travelers and other guests can use the business center, which is open 24/7, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. Rooms vary in size, but the King Room we saw was on the small side, with little room between the foot of the bed and the bathroom's entrance. Bathrooms also tend to be small, with pedestal sinks, magnifying mirrors, and modest shower stalls.

Many guests that have stayed in the room, including Al Capone, have made it through the night without any paranormal activity, while others report it being heavy during their stay. The property is less than 0.6 mi from Tennessee Aquarium and a 5-minute drive from the University of Tennessee.

In the latter decades of the 1900s, the hotel saw a revolving door of ownership, with numerous different companies taking the reins. The Hotel continued to host famous and influential guests throughout the twentieth century. Winston Churchill and his daughter found respite at the Read House during his 1932 lecture tour. However, the visit took a rather public turn when Churchill made headlines by emphatically slamming the door of his suite on an inquisitive reporter.

It started as a rooming house in the 1840s and has also been a  drugstore that sold Coca-Cola and rented rooms before assuming the name of Read House in 1926. The Read House is the longest continuously operating hotel in the southeast and holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel has gone through several renovations throughout the years; it retains all of the old-world glamor (the lobby and bar area have a 1920s glam theme) with none of the “really old hotel” vibes. Today, the Read House still looms large in Chattanooga.

According to local lore, Annalisa’s lover first brought her to the hotel sometime in the 1920s--while she was still alive, of course. Some believe that Annalisa was a prostitute, and she quickly took up with another man--sometimes even parading her new love in front of her old suitor. It was in desperate need of restoration, refurbishing. Instead of going through the hassle of a remodel, two architects from the design firm Holabird and Roche, opted to have the Read House Hotel demolished. From there, they began the sketches for a new hotel that could compete with the likes of other early twentieth-century models. It is perhaps only in thanks to Thomas Crutchfield that neither William nor Jefferson Davis died that day.

House of Prayer, Accused of Bilking Veterans Out of Millions, Said to Be Stonewalling Investigation

The facility has also hosted various IHOPKC meetings, departments, and activities. Mike Bickle’s online teaching library launched in 2009, offering its resources to anyone for free. Equipped with audio and video teachings, study notes, and other resources, the library spans over 30 years of Mike’s ministry. The diverse topics featured include intimacy with Jesus, prayer, the Sermon on the Mount, and the return of Christ. When the two first met, Bob Jones told Mike Bickle that the Lord would use him to pastor a young adult movement of singers and musicians who would pray for Israel and have strong ties to Asia.

Read the text of the prayer offered by President Russell M. Nelson to rededicate the Manti Utah Temple on Sunday, April 21, 2024. My wife and I held hands and stood on the cusp of the light blue sea beneath hot sunlight. Gigantic waves from an aggressive tide crashed onto the bodies of swimmers and bodyboarders around us.

The House of Prayer accommodates individuals or groups, providing chapels for liturgy or private prayer. There is a full staff of priests available for spiritual direction, sacramental reconciliation and retreats. Visit our Contacts page to see all of our available service times. Please observe social distancing, mask wearing, sanitizing and all other health and safety rules.

Weekend Services

Weekends at IHOPKC are designed as a three-day experience for those who desire to grow in the knowledge of love of God, be renewed in their spiritual life, and spend time in an environment of 24/7 prayer. Come encounter God in the prayer room, in the classroom, and at our weekend worship and teaching services. On September 19, 2009, while celebrating our ten-year anniversary together, we made a sober commitment before God to combine 24/7 prayers for justice with 24/7 works of justice until the Lord returns. However, at that time, we set our heart to significantly increase our outreach and ministry to others outside our missions base. Thus, we are developing many new outreach ministries that will continue 24/7 alongside our 24/7 prayer and worship.

Mike Bickle Meets Bob Jones

These waves are like the challenges,” I said to my wife, who had been unwell of late. “We need to hold hands together with Jesus and jump higher than the waves.” A surge loomed over us, and we both thrust our bodies upwards, gasping for air as the mega tower of water crashed over our heads. As in the past, the Reconstructors centers offer a methodical evangelization program, beginning with meditation, raising awareness of the sacred dimension, and then providing Catholic teaching. To achieve this, Cappelletto drew some inspiration from Indian masters, recovering from their teachings forms of profound prayer with a Christian matrix, such as the famous “Jesus prayer” (“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner”). 11 Has (A)this house, which is called by My name, become a (B)den of robbers in your sight? Advocates and lawmakers have long pointed to the GI Bill being easy prey for bogus schools to scam students and the government.

Mike Bickle controversy

Even so, the call went out from prayer warrior to prayer warrior around the world. They gathered and they interceded upon the God of all comfort to show his lovingkindness. The only person in the entire universe who can bring hope where there is only darkness.

Founded by Mike Bickle, the International House of Prayer of Kansas City began on May 7, 1999, with a humble, hungry group of young people crying out to God for thirteen hours each and every day. Four months later, on September 19, these “intercessory missionaries” extended their schedule to 24/7. A movement of unceasing worship with prayer had begun, which, in the grace of God, shall continue till Jesus returns.

These labors involve mercy ministry (e.g., food, shelter), justice issues (e.g., sanctity of life), missions, and evangelism. Experience a five-day immersion into the life of an intercessory missionary at IHOPKC, perfect for people in the workplace, home, and ministry who don’t have the time to join an internship. We celebrated twenty years of 24/7 prayer with worship, grateful to the Lord for His grace and leadership. We are thankful for all those who have served on staff—from the first worship song in the old trailers on September 19, 1999 to today.

In documents filed April 4, prosecutors want Georgia’s southern U.S. District Court to impose fines and hold several House of Prayer leaders in contempt. The community is made up of about 30 priests, a few laymen, and about 40 laywomen. The priests are incardinated in their dioceses, while the laypeople work outside — as bank officials, doctors, religious teachers, or employees of charitable organizations. For your convenience, we have compiled a helpful list of restaurants and grocery stores that are in the nearby area. Some of the details provided are the type of restaurant, address, phone number and distance from both the Red Bridge Center as well as Forerunner Church.

Some critics say the church is a cult that draws in military members and veterans to accomplish this. We have arranged special rates for our IHOPKC visitors with some local hotels that we partner with. Whether you’re coming to Kansas City for one of our events or simply to spend time in the prayer room, be sure to mention the International House of Prayer in order to receive this special rate when you call to make your reservation. Those classes were effectively loosely organized church meetings. Since 2013, the House of Prayer received $7 million in GI Bill payments, according to the VA. The school's eligibility to accept GI Bill money was not fully revoked until Military.com's investigation was published.

We held the last (for the foreseeable future) Onething conference—an annual tradition since 2002 which has attracted tens of thousands of believers to Kansas City. The last Onething built on themes of the reset, with a more spontaneous and family feel that included times of corporate confession, intercession, and repentance. Our newly renovated university campus opened its doors to returning and incoming students, offering much-needed additional space from its previous building. For the first time at IHOPU, students from all three schools—Forerunner School of Ministry, Forerunner Music Academy, and Forerunner Media Institute—were united on the same campus that year.

Over the years we’ve received many reports of believers from all over the world (including Christians in persecuted lands) who are encouraged by watching the prayer room. The webstream also blesses many houses of prayer across the globe by providing live worship with prayer. Bickle’s charismatic megachurch—which has offered round-the-clock prayer and worship since its founding in 1999—was informed of the allegations on Friday, according to The Kansas City Star, which obtained a recording of the announcement. We believe we are better equipped for ministry when our lives are rooted in prayer and worship and focused on intimacy with God, as we intercede for a breakthrough of the fullness of God’s power. The rest of the family and my friends, as they learned about the situation, were shocked to realize just how serious it was. A deadly wave crashed over me from out of nowhere and there seemed little hope.
